Old Lang’s Sign

Good-bye 2010!

Like every year that has preceded you, you had your good points and your bad points, your ups and your downs. Some of the highs didn’t always always match some of the lows but some of the lows weren’t even close to matching the height of some of the highs so, as far as I’m concerned, it all pretty much evens out in the end. Life is good and life goes on.

I Want to Sit Down

I worked on a psychiatry unit of a hospital in NY for 11 years. It was unofficially a Geriatric Psych unit because our Head of Psychiatry was a Geriatrician, so most of my patients there were senior citizens, although we’d occasionally get people in their 50’s, 40’s, 30’s and, very occasionally, 20’s and even late teens. Some of our patients were old people who were experiencing worsening of their run-of-the-mill mental illnesses like Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder but a lot of them had Dementia with “something”….agitation, depression, hallucinations or a mixture of those.

“Paul” was one of our earlier patients – I think he came through our doors in the first year we were open and he had Dementia with Agitation. He was a Read more…

About My Christmas Decorations and Stuff…

I’m probably confusing a whole lot of people with my talk and pictures about Christmas and then out of the other side of my mouth I say I’m a Secular Humanist. Actually, it gets better than that. Much.

You see, I was Read more…

The Story (and Recipe!) of the Effing Gingersnaps

Part of the Christmas traditions I’ve developed as an adult is baking. Lots and lots of baking. I bake for family, for friends, occasionally for mere friendly acquaintances, you get the picture. Although I have a few recipes that I tend to use year after year (hello, Kahlua Brownies! Thank-you, Aunt Sheila, may you R.I.P.), I try to Read more…

We Interrupt This Holiday Programming…

I’ve had the plague for the past week or so – probably the worst case of it that I’ve had in a good 10 or 20 years. It was the kind of “really bad cold” where I had to slow down on a lot of my everyday activities this time of year (I am SOOO behind on my baking!) and completely stop others (I only had 2 patients but I gave my visits away to other therapists so I wouldn’t risk spreading my germs to them) in favor of sitting, resting and watching more mindless TV than I’ve watched in years.

I got to watch a lot of Christmas specials that I usually don’t remember to tune into, like Read more…

Repeat Patient

I don’t remember his name but I remember exactly where his house is, every time I go past it. I remember hearing he was a healthy guy in these golden years of his life and that he was still active on the tennis court, even while he was in his mid-80’s. In fact, it was a tennis match that was Read more…

Just A Quickie: The “Weather” on my Blog

This blog is called “The Adventures of Littlebit 4.0” because (A) my nickname of preference is Littlebit (by the way, don’t even think of calling me Read more…
